What's the Story of SANTA

Who Is Santa Claus?

The legend Santa Claus dates all the way back to the 3rd century. Santa Claus is often envisioned as a plump jolly old man with a long curly beard and a thick red suit. Also known as Father Christmas in Western Christian cultures, he is based on Saint Nicholas, a bishop from Myra in ancient Greece. He was born around 280 AD in Patara, Lycia, which is located near present-day Turkey. Saint Nicholas was known for his kindness and generosity towards the sick and the underprivileged. He often donated his wealth to help the poor. He is remembered for his acts of kindness and tales of his generosity are told even today. Let's take a look at some of these stories.

The Three Maiden Daughters

According to a famous Christian legend, Saint Nicholas once saved a family consisting of a father and his three daughters. The father did not have enough money to take care of his three daughters and was very worried. On hearing of the family's plight, Saint Nicholas secretly visited their house on the night of Christmas Eve and slipped three bags of gold coins through the chimney, which ended up falling into socks that were kept drying near the fireplace. The father was very thankful and used the money for his daughters. Since then, children keep a pair of red socks near the fireplace in the hope that SaintNicholas, or Santa Claus as he was later named, will visit them on Christmas Eve and drop a present into the socks.

The Innocent Men

Once while Saint Nicolas was visiting a distant that was under the care of his church, the concerned residents of Myra informed him about the ruler of Eustachius, who had convicted three innocent men of a crime and had given them the death penalty. On hearing this, Saint Nicholas immediately advanced towards Eustachius. As he reached the periphery of the city, he started to ask the passers-by about the three prisoners. He was informed that the execution was to be held in just a few minutes in the executioner's field. Saint Nicholas hastily rushed to the location and stopped the execution of the three-man who was tied down. It is believed that Saint Nicholas snatched the sword from the executioner and threw it on the ground. Being a bishop, Saint Nicholas had higher authority than the rules, and he asked the ruler to free the three men.

The Real Reason Behind Gift-giving

The tradition of Christmas gift-giving started in the mid-18th century, influenced by the festival of Saturnalia celebrated in ancient Rome where the gift-giving traditions commenced. According to Christian traditions, exchanging gifts is also a symbolic representation associated with the legendary story of the Three Wise Men mentioned in the Bible. Also known as the Biblical Magi or the Three Kings, the Three wise Men traveled to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, to visit him and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense, and Myrrh. The three gifts were specifically chosen. God is associated with Kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the King of King s. Frankincense was used in worship and showed that people would Jesus. Myrrh is a perfume that is put on dead bodies to make them smell nice; it symbolized that Jesus would suffer and die.
